Empowering women in scientific fieldwork.

Scientific fieldwork poses numerous challenges, from tick bites to sharing a tent with snoring coworkers. But fieldwork can be especially challenging for women. Stereotypes about women’s physical abilities, safety concerns, limited access to toilets and medical care, caretaking responsibilities, and sexist hostilities detract from women’s experiences and discourage girls and female-identifying scientists from fieldwork.

Women in Fieldwork seeks to empower girls and women in field-based research. By sharing the stories of women field scientists, we try to demystify fieldwork and identify barriers to women’s presence in the field. More importantly, Women in Fieldwork celebrates these women’s accomplishments and the aspects of fieldwork that delight and inspire them. We hope our stories will encourage future generations of well-equipped, trailblazing scientists who can’t wait to go out into the field.
